A common theme I’ve been hearing over the last month is people feeling in a “funk”. A lot of focus has been on what one doesn’t have. This lack thinking tends to take away your motivation, energy and just leaves you feeling down. The reasons identified for these situations vary from the economy to the weather, from a co-worker to a spouse and family.
Does this sound familiar? At some point we all find ourselves falling into the trap of lack thinking. When it does happen, don’t be too hard on yourself as it’s normal human behavior. The good news is there are steps you can take to get out and back to abundance.
Here are some actions to take when you find yourself stuck in lack thinking mode.
Lack thinking |
Positive approach |
|
Focusing on what you don’t have. |
Replace with |
Write a list of what is right in your life and/or business. Focus on what you do have. |
You’re spending time with people who love to join your “pity party”. |
Replace with |
Stay away from the energy vampires. You’ll recognize these people as the ones that leave you feeling emotionally drained after a conversation. When you recognize this, exit the conversation with a positive comment and spend your time with people who inspire and energize you. |
You blame others people or things for what’s wrong. |
Replace with |
Spend a few minutes and identify the real cause of your “funk”. What is it that’s really holding you back? Be honest with yourself! |
Negative self talk has taken over. |
Replace with |
Remind yourself of your strengths. What are you good at? There is no point in comparing yourself to others as what others have has no direct impact on you and your happiness. |
Focusing on what you wished you’d done differently in the past or worrying about the future. |
Replace with |
You can’t change the past, the future is going to happen whether you are ready or not, so focus on the present. What can you do today to benefit your business or your life? Then do it! |
While lack thinking begins as an emotional state of mind, it most definitely affects your physical self and those around you. So, when you find yourself in this place, accept that it’s human nature to get down, then take steps to get out! Don’t wait for the phase to pass, make it happen! You are the only one that can.

This is a great reminder to be aware of these traps and to quickly change our approach. It’s strange how we go about our business day after day and fall into this lack thinking trap or even, let others (“energy vampires”) pull us in to these traps. Just in this week, I can count the number of times I’ve fallen into all five of these traps and in some cases, I’ve been able to take the more positive approach.
