I just spent 30 minutes listening to a small business owner’s view on networking groups. “They are a waste of time. Nobody ever refers you.” While that may be the case for some people, I completely disagree!
To be successful in networking groups, remember it’s about building relationships. If you only attend to receive business, and expect it quickly, you may end up disappointed. Make the most of these opportunities. Learn who people are, not just what they do. Ask how you can support them. Then share your business and something personal about you. People do business with those they like.
Have a follow up plan for those you connect with. Remember, it’s netWORKing, not netWAITing. Whether it’s a phone call, personal note, coffee date or an email, let them know you enjoyed talking with them and will think of people to connect them with. And yes, ask them to do the same for you.
So, when it comes to networking groups, attend regularly, be genuine, follow up and have fun. The referrals will come.
